August 23rd Movie: Summer Stock

Thursday, August 23rd
Movie Running Time: 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

This is a marvelous “let’s-put-on-a-show” musical that is a delight for all seasons. Starring Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Gloria DeHaven, Marjorie Main, Phil Silvers, Ray Collins and Eddie Bracken.

Jane Falbury (Garland) is a struggling New England farmer, who, as a favor to her actress sister Abigail (DeHaven), allows a Broadway theatre company to rehearse their new show in her barn if they “pay their way” by pitching in with all the farm chores!  During rehearsals, Jane finds herself falling for the show’s director Joe Ross (Kelly), who also happens to be engaged to the show’s leading lady, Abigail.  When a petulant Abigail takes off for the brighter lights of New York, Jane takes over the lead and the show becomes a ‘smash-hit’.  The pleasures in this movie are abundant, with a cavalcade of high-stepping dance numbers and such great songs as “Friendly Star”, “If You Feel Like Singing, Sing”, “Get Happy” and “You, Wonderful You”.  And there is a great supporting cast of Marjorie Main, Phil Silvers, Eddie Bracken and Ray Collins.
