Girl Crazy

Girl Crazy
Thursday, August 31st, 2017
1:00 – 2:41 p.m.

GIRL CRAZY
With George and Ira Gershwin’s magical score, the West may have been wilder, but never more tuneful!

Starring Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney with June
Allyson, Nancy Walker, ‘Rags’ Ragland, and Guy Kibbee. Also featuring Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra.

From Garland’s rendition of “But Not for Me” to the grand finale of “I Got Rhythm”, Girl Crazy is one of the most buoyant tune-fests ever put on a screen. Rich kid Danny Churchill (Rooney) has a taste for wine, women and song, but not for higher education. So his father ships him to an all-male college out West where there’s not supposed to be a female for miles. But before Danny arrives, he spies a pair of legs extending out from under a stalled roadster. They belong to the dean’s granddaughter Ginger Gray (Garland), who is more interested in keeping the financially strapped college open than falling for Danny’s romantic line. At least at first. George and Ira Gershwin’s magical score also features “Embraceable You” and ‘Bidin’ My Time”. Featured players June Allyson and Nancy Walker will leave you smiling, and Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra will keep you dancing. You won’t require anything more: go Girl Crazy and have a ball!

The Rainmaker

The Rainmaker
Thursday, September 14th, 2017
Movie Running Time: 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

THE RAINMAKER
Burt Lancaster turns in one of the most colorful performances of his career as a wandering charlatan named Starbuck “The Rainmaker”. Katharine Hepburn is equally wonderful as Lizzy Curry, a lonely ranch girl who blossoms under his spell when their paths cross!

Starring Burt Lancaster and Katharine Hepburn.
Co-starring Wendell Corey, Lloyd Bridges, Earl Holliman and Cameron Prud’homme.

Katharine Hepburn is the believably plain yet magnetically beautiful tomboy rancher living with her father and two brothers on their 1913 drought-stricken Kansas farm. And Burt Lancaster is brilliantly cast in the role of the smooth-talking con man who sells his rainmaking “powers” to unsuspecting, drought-ridden Western towns. He strikes a deal with the family to bring them a much-needed downpour and in the process slowly convinces Lizzy that she is a lovely and desirable woman. The result is a genuinely appealing and beautifully executed romance, mixed with sheer, hilarious fun!

“GISELLE” BALLET
Superbly presented by American Ballet Theatre.
Starring the great legendary partnership of Carla Fracci and Erik Bruhn.

Act One. The story of Giselle takes place in a small village in the Rhineland. A nobleman, Albrecht, has been courting a village girl, Giselle, disguised as a village boy himself. He has a jealous rival in Hilarion the woodsman, who discovers Albrecht’s true identity. A hunting party of nobles arrives which includes Albrecht’s betrothed, who is charmed by Giselle’s beauty and gives her a necklace. When Hilarion reveals the true identity of Albrecht, in her shock and pain, the delicate Giselle dies. Act Two takes place at night in a cemetery not far from the village. Hilarion comes to mourn at Giselle’s grave, but is caught at midnight by the avenging spirits or ‘Wilis’ of the young girls who died before their wedding day, who pursue him to his death. Albrecht also comes bearing flowers for Giselle’s grave, and is caught and condemned by the ‘Wilis’ and their queen – Myrtha – to dance to his death. But the protective spirit of Giselle loves him still, and she succeeds in saving him, by dancing with him, and for him. As the dawn breaks, the Wilis and their dark power fades. Giselle and Albrecht embrace in a final poignant farewell as she must also return to her grave, but with a free spirit, as her love has transcended the vengeful power of the Wilis forever.
